The Pakistan Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project is making significant progress as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project aims to modernize and expand Pakistan’s railway network, improving connectivity, speed, and efficiency.



【Recent Developments】

Financial and Diplomatic Advancements: In February 2025, during Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to China, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the ML-1 project. The visit emphasized strengthening infrastructure collaboration, including finalizing financial agreements for the railway upgrade.

Chinese Expert Delegation: A team of Chinese experts is expected to visit Pakistan later this month to finalize the financial plan. Once approved, the bidding process will commence, leading to the construction phase.

Project Phases and Scope:The ML-1 project will be executed in multiple phases

Phase 1: Covers a 929-km section with an estimated cost of $3.315 billion. It focuses on upgrading the Karachi-Hyderabad and Hyderabad-Multan segments.

Phase 2: Includes the remaining 796 km, covering the Multan-Lahore and Lahore-Peshawar sections, with an estimated cost of $3.363 billion. This phase also includes a new dry port near Havelian.

【Key Benefits】

Increased Speed: Passenger train speeds will increase from the current 65-110 km/h to 120-160 km/h.

Enhanced Capacity: Daily train operations will rise from 34 to between 137 and 171.

Economic Impact: The project will significantly boost Pakistan’s transport infrastructure, enhancing trade and economic growth.
